Sandra Marker Trail
Tree Canopy & Native Plant Habitat
A tree-lined trail for shade, habitat value,
and a greener public corridor
Refugia Marin is thrilled to be part of restoring a key section of the Sandra Marker Trail by planting native trees and understory vegetation.
This initiative responds to the recent removal of 18 mature trees during a nearby bike path extension project.
The new planting will bring much-needed shade, improve biodiversity, and help restore soil health. It will also create a more welcoming and safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists, while offering educational opportunities for people of all ages in the community.

The Sandra Marker Trail, originally a rail line, was repurposed into a pedestrian and bike path 30 years ago as a safe school route.
Championed by former Corte Madera Mayor, Sandra Marker, who worked with neighboring Larkspur, local schools and residents to transform the abandoned rail line into a safe path to school with School Pathways funding.
Today, the trail provides a picturesque and convenient route to more than six local schools, and remains a vital link between neighborhoods and community spaces.
"The Best Day to Plant a Tree is Today!"
We will be reinvigorating this stretch of the trail in phases. First, we will be planting native trees such as California native live oaks and buckeyes along the north side of the trail.
In the future, we plan to add benches and a native plant understory and plantings to create a safe and enjoyable pitstop along the currently long, hot path.

Many thanks to our Advisory Board member, Tim Walch, for his time, vision, and dedication to helping bring this project to life, as well as the Town of Corte Madera for their support.
